ICC Women Down ISU Club Team
ShaVonn Watkins’s three-pointer in the last minute of the game sent the Cougar crowd into a frenzy to finish off the scoring for the #3 Illinois Central College women’s basketball team in an 81-36 win over the Illinois State University Club Team. The sophomore from Peoria had torn her ACL back in December and is out for the season but was inserted late in the game to get a chance at sinking one last three-pointer in her career and the sophomore delivered with a three from the left wing that swished in with just under :20 seconds to go!
Gabby Williams and Chanta Wright combined for the first eight points for the Cougars, followed by an April Gebke three-pointer to give the Cougars a 13-4 lead with 16:06 in the first half. ICC continued their assault on the basket as Naomi Harris scored with a putback to put ICC up 25-6 with 5:00 remaining. Wright and Harris added two more inside buckets, and Helena Rodriguez added two layups to help put ICC up 37-17 going into the locker room.
The Cougars moved the ball well to start the half, scoring on their first seven possessions and capped by a Rodriguez jumper in the lane to take a 54-21 lead at the 14:00 mark. Michaela Kumer got in on the action with five points of her own to put ICC up 61-27 and Shay Robinson added an offensive putback to give ICC a 69-28 lead with 5:11 to go. The Cougars substituted freely in the game, with all ICC players reaching the scoring column, and finished off by Watkin’s three.
Wright posted 18 points and 4 rebounds, while Gebke added 11 points, 5 boards, and 3 assists. Williams notched double figures with 10 points and 4 rebounds, while Kumer tallied 9 points and 2 assists. Naomi Harris pulled down 10 rebounds and netted 8 points, while Shaakera Jones had 4 points. Robinson also grabbed 10 boards to go along with 3 points, and Jazmine Stubblefield dished out 5 assists and scored 3 points. Watkins splashed three points. Tiffany Masters led the team with 6 assists: she and Abi Besso each chipped in 2 points to round out the scoring.
